Kokoda Trek FAQ's
The safest way to experience Kokoda, with a highly qualified medic on every trip.
How long is the Kokoda Trek?
Our Kokoda Trek runs 11 days / 10 nights including travel, with 9 days / 8 nights actually on the track — roughly 96km through tropical rainforest across the Owen Stanley Range, covering 12–19km per day.
Is the Kokoda Track hard?
Yes — it's physically and mentally demanding, with steep climbs and descents, high humidity, mud, river crossings and long days carrying your own pack. With solid preparation and experienced support it's achievable, but it will test you.
Is there a medic on the trek?
Yes. Kokoda Courage is the only Kokoda trek operator to include a highly qualified critical care medic on every trek, supported by satellite phone, an extensive first aid kit and a defibrillator.
Who leads the treks?
Our trek leaders bring a combined 120+ years of operational emergency management experience across Australia and PNG — backgrounds spanning Special Operations Group, military service, professional firefighting and critical incident response.
How do I train for Kokoda?
Our training plan focuses on cardiovascular endurance, lower-body strength and load management — hill training, stair sessions and weighted pack walks over several months. See our full Kokoda Trek Training Plan for details.
Do I need a permit to trek Kokoda?
Yes — a trekking permit is only available through a licensed commercial operator. Kokoda Courage is a licensed Kokoda Track Authority operator (Operator #11).
Can children trek Kokoda with Kokoda Courage?
Yes, through our Next Generation™ family program — we welcome children as young as 12, subject to a pre-approval process based on physical preparation and medical clearance.
What's included in the trek?
Internal airfare (Port Moresby–Popondetta), on-track accommodation, deluxe pre/post-trek hotel accommodation in Port Moresby, all meals, experienced local porters, a comprehensive emergency plan, and your Kokoda Courage trek pack with completion medal.
