Quick Facts

Dates
September 14 – 28, 1942
Campaign
Kokoda Track campaign, 1942
Location
Kokoda Track, Owen Stanley Range, Papua New Guinea

Australians attempted to halt the Japanese advance at Ioribaiwa. Japanese forces, stretched by their lengthy supply lines, began to withdraw.

Ioribaiwa Ridge marked the southernmost point of the Japanese advance along the track — close enough that Port Moresby was reportedly visible in the distance. Overextended supply lines and pressure elsewhere in the Pacific forced a Japanese withdrawal shortly after, turning the tide of the campaign.
