Australian forces clashed with the Japanese in the Oivi-Gorari area. The Australians successfully repelled Japanese attacks.
Oivi–Gorari was a decisive Australian victory late in the campaign, inflicting heavy losses on the retreating Japanese force and effectively ending organised Japanese resistance on the track, opening the way to the north coast at Buna and Gona.
