Dates
August 26 – September 5, 1942
Campaign
Kokoda Track campaign, 1942
Location
Kokoda Track, Owen Stanley Range, Papua New Guinea

Australian forces faced intense Japanese attacks in the Isurava area. Fierce fighting occurred as the Australians sought to defend their positions.

Isurava is the most famous single battle of the campaign — the outnumbered 39th Battalion, alongside the arriving 2/14th Battalion, held the line against a much larger Japanese force. It's remembered for individual acts of bravery, including that of Private Bruce Kingsbury VC, and for buying critical time for Australian reinforcements. The Isurava Memorial, dedicated in 2002, honours the battle with four black granite pillars inscribed Courage, Endurance, Mateship and Sacrifice.
